Trade Show Lecture Series Topics From The 2010 Show!
Specification and BIM
Time: 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Location: Lecture Room A
Presenter: David Watson, Digicon Infromation Inc. (Edmonton, AB)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is beginning to become an industry leader for project delivery, but this new delivery method has yet to link the barrier between the drawings and Specifications. This lecture series will identify the current barriers of BIM in Specifications, provide BIM Specification Solutions, and present tools for bridging the Drawings with the Specifications during the BIM process. Discussion on the advantages of BIM-Based Master Specification would conclude the presentation.
David Watson, CET, FCSC
President of Digicon Information Inc.,
Edmonton, Alberta
David Watson has approximately 25 years experience in the construction industry, and is currently President of Digicon Information Inc., one of Canada's two developers of commercial master specifications.
Watson’s career began with an honours diploma from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in the Air Conditioning Engineering program. He worked in the HVAC field in a variety of capacities, as estimator, air and water balancing, and sales.
As a self-learned software developer, Watson assisted his father's independent specification practice by developing software tools. During this period, a 'smart' specification software system was developed and sold in Canada and the USA. Numerous specification automation projects were undertaken, including metrification of the AIA Masterspec in the USA, a master specification for Texas Instruments, and custom editing tools for large consulting clients. The SpecMacros software (for Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect) currently marketed by Digicon, was developed by David. David worked with a Norwegian software company to develop Digicon's flagship Specnique editing software for the Canadian marketplace. David is currently in development of an industry-leading BIM specifications software slated for public release in early 2010.
Digicon Information Inc. is a partnership formed in 1996 with Wayne Watson. Digicon develops and maintains commercial master specifications, and provides a variety of software development and writing services related to specifications and construction product information. In a corporate alliance with Construction Specifications Canada (CSC), David manages the Spex.ca document store marketing documents published by Digicon, CSC, as well as the National Master Specification (NMS) produced by PWGSC.
Watson is involved in a variety of volunteer organizations. He is registered as a Certified Engineering Technologist, as a 20-year member of the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET). He is a 20-year member of Construction Specifications Canada (CSC), participates actively in marketing and new technology committees, and in 2009 was awarded CSC Fellowship. Through Digicon, has been a member of the International Construction Information Society (ICIS) for over 10 years and currently serving as ICIS Secretary.
David owns and flies his own aircraft, particularly formation flying and aerobatics. David is a member of Canadian Owners and Pilots Association, Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association, North American Trainer Association, Red Star Pilots Association, Cascade Warbirds Association and the Aerobatic Club of Alberta.

LEED vs Sustainability in Specifications
Time: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: Lecture Room A
Presenter: David Wilson & Lyle Scott, Cohos Evamy Integratedesign.
This two-part presentation will first discuss how LEED design and documentation is incorporated into the Specifications, impact of LEED on the Specifications, and the important role Specifications play for obtaining LEED Designation. Lastly, the importance of creating a LEED Team within the firm, and the difference between LEED and Sustainability will be discussed. Do you have to obtain a LEED Designation to provide a Sustainable Building?
David Wilson’s Bio
David Wilson’s work experience has been in the building design profession, primarily centered on specification writing. He has been a member of Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) throughout his career and has held most local chapter positions at least once. In addition he currently is an On-line instructor of educational courses for Construction Specification Canada (CSC), and sits on the CSC National Quality Document Committee and sits on the RSW Certification Board. He earned his RSW designation in 1987 and in 2005, was inducted into CSC’s College of Fellows (FCSC). He has well over 30 years experience in the design and construction ranging from large private practices, corporate and all three levels of government.
